Discover the magic of Titanomagnetite

A guided shuttle tour of the Waiuku township with local history and photography stops, then out to Karioitahi Beach.  The 4wd shuttle will take you down the beach to an area where the art begins!  Using various magnets of differing shapes and strengths, Linda will show you how to create amazing sculptures by manipulating the magnetic properties of the sand - a unique experience coupled with in-depth knowledge of the local area.  Complete your experience at The Tamakae reserve with the story of how Waiuku came to have its name, then finally to the Kentish Hotel, Waiuku's historic landmark and New Zealand's longest continuous licence pub.   This experience suits all ages, The Kentish hotel is family friendly.  Why  not couple this with a ride on the Glenbrook Steam Train? The Roost's shuttle can meet you at the station.

Make croissants NZ style - Linda's own adaptation of a traditional french croissant recipe with Rewana 'bug' (a traditional maori yeast) - these are spectacular!

The Roost aims to be a self sufficient paradise in suburbia - Linda's harnesses wild yeasts to make many traditional breads and pastries.  In this experience, Linda provides each stage of the dough already made so you can learn and feel the skill of what is usually a three day process. Within two hours you will have the knowledge to harness your own yeasts, create mouth watering croissants, have had a guided tour of Linda and Graeme's self sufficient projects and also been able to take some croissants home with you! Suitable for late teens and adults, however feel free to bring children if they can be supervised while you partake of the experience.

Make Rewana (Maori Bread)

Learn the secrets to creating the Rewana 'bug' and enjoy the tactile experience of creating a traditional  Rewana loaf.  Enjoy a guided tour through Linda and Graeme's self sufficient projects and learn about the history of the Waiuku area and surrounds.  A lovely way to spend a few hours and of course enjoy the delicious Rewana straight from the oven.

Cycle the town and pathways of Waiuku

Linda and Graeme have explored many of New Zealand's cycle tracks with their family and now provide guided cycle tours of the Waiuku township and pathways that surround the area.  The tour encompasses the historic areas and many stops for photographs and history discussions are included.  The distance is approximately 8km taken at a very leisurely pace.  This experience provides bikes for two adults, along with helmets - if you have a larger group interested in taking part discuss with Linda as bike hire is available locally.

Take the Lighthouse Lunch

Waiuku is the gateway to the beautiful Awhitu Peninsula.  Guests at The Roost can order a 'Lighthouse Lunch' complete with thermos and picnic blankets for them to explore the many bays on the Peninsula, as well as journey to the top of the historic Lighthouse.  The views are spectacular.  Guests may head away in their own vehicle or discuss with Linda for a guided tour of the bays as well as encompassing the Karioitahi Beach - a complete tour with black sand beaches and white sand beaches!
